This Is My Soapbox, Let Me Show You
Apr. 29th, 2008 10:11 amOver the past few days I've been having discussions about feminism, fat acceptance and the like. And after every conversation and email I get the lingering feeling that I should apologize, or make sure my friends know they are still my friends, etc. Not because of anything the participants in the conversation have said or done (well, for the most part anyway) but because I have been trained not to rock the boat too hard, to not be too strident, to be afraid that disagreeing to vociferously will lose me friends. But I'm proud of myself because not once in the past week have I given in to that urge to apologize, to make nice, to soften my arguments or my reactions to make it easier on the people I'm debating with.
So here's what my soapbox looks a bit like. And I'm not planning on stepping down, shutting up or closing my eyes anytime soon.
People deserve to be treated as people in all ways - all shapes, sizes, creeds, sexualities, religions, colors, etc. This can be harder than it sounds. Try anyway.
